Many players are tapping into this shift by building their own brand around their exploits on and off the table. Some rely on their aggressive playing style, others on their shyness. Antonio Esfandiari: Antonio the Magician

Born Amir in 1978 Iran, Antonio moved to the US at the age of 9 and by 19 had legally changed his name to Antonio. He initially trained as a magician and felt that ‘the Magician’ had a better ring to it than Esfandiari. He would spend 12 hours a day practicing magic and eventually was performing on the Las Vegas Strip which is where he got into poker. The name still applies, as he is a veritable magician at the table.

In 2004 he had his first major win, netting US$1.4 million and first WPT title. Shortly after he claimed his first WSOP Bracelet. The rest, as they say, is history. Whilst stepping away from magic, he has solidified his place at the table of poker greats, with an estimated US$27.8 million in overall winnings, and the ability to put on a show for anyone watching.

Daniel ‘Kid Poker’ Negreanu

A hugely successful poker player, Negreanu started playing poker at the tender age of 16. He has an affinity for numbers, maths and probability, as well as a highly competitive streak. At 21, he packed his bags and headed to Vegas, with his life savings collected through various local poker endeavours. Several defeats and returns home to Toronto, Negreanu never gave up, and at the age of 23 he became the youngest player to win a WSOP Bracelet, earning the nickname ‘Kid Poker’.

Negreanu has utilised the nickname throughout his career to set himself apart from others, and has used this as his screen name online and as part of sponsorship and ad campaigns. Though no longer as young as he was, the name is still associated with him in the world of poker.

Phil ‘OMGClayAiken’ Galfond

Galfond has won three WSOP Bracelets, has appeared in a number of TV shows including High Stakes Poker and owns a real money poker site where he is also a coach. The name Clay Aiken was chosen to combat the macho culture that was influencing the names of poker players at the time.

Aiken was an often ridiculed contestant on American Idol in 2003., and the aim was to inject some humour into the game, as well as make opponents feel embarrassed if they were to lose to him. This reference to pop culture was well timed; Aiken was popular in the heyday of the show’s popularity and it would be difficult to find someone who had not heard of him!

Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis

Though a rather crude and vulgar name, it is certainly one that sticks in the mind, and the success that Karamalikis has had is clear. He has won more than US6.5 million online and US$4.7 million live. When questioned, Karamalikis has stated that he made the user name when he was a teenager and struggling with the typical adolescent issues and worries, and when he started winning he decided just to run with it! Fittingly, he has since gone on to become CEO of Big Stack Underwear.

Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan

Dwan created his username when he was just 17, choosing ‘Durrrr’ as he thought this would intimidate his opponents, angering them when they lost putting them further on tilt and making it easier to win more from them. The name ‘Dur’ is actually a real name, and in Hebrew means accumulating, and accumulating chips is something he has certainly been doing since he started playing poker, though how much can be attributed to his choice of name is up for debate. Furthermore, in 2018, he married Bianca Rossi, whose Instagram handle is ‘durrrrswife’, meaning the whole family is buying into the power of the name.

It’s as Shakespeare once wrote, ‘A rose by any other name…’: what players call themselves or what their nicknames have little bearing on their skill, but can certainly make them stand out from the crowd!
